Both stories, A Rose for Emily from William Faulkner and The Fall of the House of Usher from Edgar Allan Poe, contain particularly Gothic elemnts and style: full fo horror, dread, a mysterious house, etc. However, they both have quite differences such as how they are plotted and developed. Each has their own style of characterized writing. Also, A Rose for Emily is narrated in third person and The Fall of the House of Usher in first person. Still, as much differences they might have, they related in how much similar things as well they have.
Just as Edgar Allan Poe's short story, William Faulkner's focus on great houses. They both are mysterious, fancy houses and rarely visited ones; yet, their structures aren't alike. Likewise, they reflect equally their owner's condition of mind or sickness. They might not look alike as outer or inter appearances but, they indeed resemble their each puzzling masters. For example, Emily Grierson's house was barely painted and dank in the interior, dust was everywhere, gloomy atmosphere similar to The House of Usher and stench fo death. But unlike Emily Grierson's house, The House of Usher gives already that death, mysterious and gloomy atmosphere with the entirely dark interior.
Similar to Will Falukner, Edgar Allan Poe includes in his story the necrophilia but in a different way. Necrophilia is the sexual attraction to corpses. However, in The Fall of the House of Usher, the protagonist doesn't have that sexual attraction but indeed, the wanting of her sister to be alive, can be considered necrophilia; there is the questioning of necrophilia presented. In contrast, Roderick Usher and the unknown narrator buried Usher's sister. His mind sickness causes him to see things and hear voices; he pretends she is dead. Anyway, death is part of these stories and the longing and wanting of corpses.
Other similarities of these short stories are the characters themselves. They are wealthy, mysterious characters, the last of a family's heir. Both stories recount the decay of both characters but besides the similarities, the characters are different. In contrast to Roderick usher, Emily Grierson is not exactly mentally ill, but insane unlike unlike Usher who is mentally ill and buries her sister alive. Whereas Usher feels sorry for his sister, Emily doesn't feel any remorse about killing Homer--since he didn't want any relationship, she killed him-- and she's guilty unlike Usher whose intentions weren't intentional. On the other hand, Emily has that sexual attraction which assures us about her insanity. I comparison to Emily, Usher is merely mentally ill and frightened, an innocent man.
Despite the similitudes, the stories are different with the Gothic elements just as the same. The differences are quite much, and as you could see, the characters are totally opposites. But, since they are Gothic tales, they are in some way alike. Both stories of death, horror, mysterious, and Gothic times influencing in these two famous writers.
